Filming has started in Govan on The Young Team, a new BBC drama based on Graeme Armstrong's novel.

The six-part series follows 15-year-old Alan "Azzy" Williams and his friends in Airdrie as they try to join a local gang, and Azzy ends up at the centre of a territorial feud. It explores friendship, identity and belonging, as well as addiction and gang violence.

Jakob James Smith, who starred in MobLand, plays Azzy. Connor Newall plays Big Kenzie and Scot Greenan plays Eck. Kevin McKidd plays headteacher Mr McGiver and Laura Fraser plays Azzy's mother, Angela.

Much of the young cast was found through an open casting call in North Lanarkshire, which director and executive producer Paul McGuigan said drew more than 1,000 applicants. It is McGuigan's first time directing in Scotland in 30 years.

The series is being made for BBC One, BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer with Screen Scotland, and FOX Entertainment Global will distribute it worldwide. More casting will be announced later.
